Route Notes BC 17/10 4900m HPt 21,24/10 5900m Josef Houben and 3 Sherpas 21/10 5800m by Odina Grosso. Fixed rope: from 5300m deposit camp to 5900m high point = 600m. Wolfgang Vollmann never went to BC, leaving Kathmandu before the two others had arrived, due to a knee problem. Had planned to establish 2 high-altitude camps at 5900m and 6400m. Above a deposit camp at 5300m, fixed 600m of rope until 5900m, where a 160m high rock bareer topped by an overhanging serac stopped all attempts to go further (steep blue ice). Sherpas went 5 or 6 times to the 5900m high point. Houben stopped twice at 5900m on 21 and 24 Oct. Grosso stopped at 5800m 100m below the rock barreer on 21 Oct. At night always avalanches, decided conditions to be too dangerous. Return trek by Thorong La and Muktinath. 10 years ago Tilicho was in snow conditions, now rock with delicate seracs; a consequence of the global warming effect?
