Route Notes The team flew from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and on to Surkhet on 10 October and on 13 October to Simikot. They then trekked from Simikot up the Karnali River to Yalbang and south to Chala village and farther south to Kalang Kharka and to BC. On the 18th, they arrived at BC (4150m), which was north of the mountain on a large glacier. Two days later they established C1 at 4800m higher on the glacier, and on the 21st they made C2 at 5600m on the west glacier. C3 was placed on the 24th at 5800m on small ridge, the west ridge of a small peak, Rani Himal, at the beginning of Saipal's North Ridge. They fixed 500m of rope on this small ridge to the top of Rani Himal; this section was very steep, and the rope would be needed for the members descent. C4 was pitched on the 27th at 6240m on Saipal's North Ridge, and two days later, on 29 October, three members went to Saipal's 6925m high NE Summit (aka Saipal East Humla). Bonhomme, Grobel and Jung left C4 at 4:30 am, reached the NE Summit via the North Ridge at 11:30 am and returned to C4. All members had gone to the top of Rani Himal at 6200m on the 27th, but five of them went only to C3 because some were tired, for some the route ahead was too difficult, and some had previously suffered from frostbite, so their frostbite sites were sensitive to cold. Now they were running out of time. All members and Sherpas left BC on the 30th.
