| Route Notes | BC at normal site C1 at normal site C2 at top of Dutch Rib C3 on North Face High point on North Face. C4 intended for 7600m but on 19th Sept reached 7500m when big slab avalanche started from above those moving up and carried them 1000m down mountain; 2 members and 6 Sherpas carried down but 2 only 300m (Norbu Tagby injured in lower left leg, Sonam Tshering uninjured). Bae Seung-Youl was at C3. 1 member was alive and Americans gave mouth-to-mouth resucitation but he soon died of internal injuries. Lee Seong-Jee killed instantly as were 4 Sherpas: Jangbu (body not found), Dawa Sange (Everest 1990 summit), Lhakpa Tendi and Tenzing; bodies, covered by deep snow by Bae and left on avalanching slope. Climbing ceased and left BC 22nd Sept. Made route for other teams. 2 other big snow avalanches 11th Sept; broke tents at C2 and 15th ABC hit - 3 tents taken away. In both cases hit by winds from avalanche no one hurt. Leader intends to lead another team to Annapurna I next year to finish climb started by those who were killed. Matt and Julie Culberson - 7 Oct 1991 Koreans never did any lead climbing, made Sherpas do it all, pushed Sherpas to climb where and when they (Sherpas) thought it dangerous, denounced Sherpas as lazy. Americans put in some rope for Koreans. |
