Route Notes BC at usual site for N Face (same as Italians) C1 at normal route's C1 site C2 at bottom of a 500m couloir just above Herzog's "cauliflower ridge" High point at 6000m top of couloir. Wanted to do entire NW Ridge from bottom of it but too long, so took same route, using N Face route, to start of same ridge on route used by Vion's '81 French expedition. Grison climbed couloir to 6000m (top of couloir) and beginning of NW Ridge proper. News [of Grison's death] reached BC next morning and team immediately decided to call off climb because of great danger from serac between BC and bottom of couloir and loss of motivation following death of Grison. Grison fell 200m from 6000m while starting return to C2 probably when fixed rope came away on 23rd; buried in crevasse.
Accidents Grison fatal fall; no other accidents, etc.
