| Route Notes | Permitted to trek ex-Pokhara to basecamp of Annapurna I; permit granted 1-1/2 months ago (first week of June) 6th or later. Had with them 1 Sherpa, Ang Tsering of Khumjung, a cook. Collected application for form for autumn permit for Annapurna I for '67 early this week from For Ministry. Left KTM for Pokhara June 7th - left Kathmandu for India by road July 20th. Climbed unnamed 6200m peak in Annapurna range in course of reconnaissance of Annapurna I. 2-3 months ago Rimal refused permission for application from them for 4 peaks. Rimal says Foreign Ministry will ignore their unauthorized climb since peak very small and doesn't want to harm developing relations with clean slate at this time. Dr. Pran Nath Nath of Putali Sadak who knew Iranian Dr. said Akbar had dislocation injury and was several days in Pokhara hospital but well by time left KTM. Ang Tsering of Khumjung (cook) - 23 July 65 8 day's trek to Muktinath; there delayed 2 days getting new porters who would go to high altitudes. Iranian members went on ahead to top of hill which was foot of mountain they climbed; he met them there and they established base camp a little higher in snow (1 day's trek from Boubok Lekh); he was told to stay in camp while 4 members climbed from 10 am on June 21st; he did not see them reach top because of intermittent fog but at 4 pm saw them coming down from top; when saw them going up saw them climbing by rock, avoiding deep snow areas - coming down, half-way, at 7 pm, doctor fell into crevasse and so deep if hadn't been roped would have fallen for rope caught his arm and stuck for 1 hour; others called him to come and help bring Dr. down and he managed to reach them in dark and without markers at 10 pm; finally reached camp at midnight. From camp went to village Narsongaon and there advised to return to Bambok Lekh which did and returned to Pokhara in 13 days from camp. Members reached Pokhara 2 days ahead of him; day after he arrived they flew to Kathmandu. He thinks they reached summit although didn't actually see them there. They showed him photos in Kathmandu, taken on summit. Autumn Mana where should have gone on to Annapurna base camp, on 10th day from Pokhara, members said let's go east and climb small peak. When he said a Japanese expedition had been fined for an unauthorized climb, then said their permit allowed them to go to 20,000 ft and this peak just about that altitude so he need not worry. When he saw them they were only about 15 minutes climb below summit. They were certainly very near top when he could see them. He stays in Kathmandu till time to go with Yugoslavs to Kangbachen with Lhotse Shar sirdar Pasang from Darjeeling. |
