| Route Notes | The plan was to scale Annapurna I by the seldom attempted Messner route of spring 1985 on the NW Face. But they got no higher than 6000m before illness struck Troillet and the climb was abandoned. They made their BC as Messner had made his, on the left side of the Mristi Khola, at 4000m on 8 September. On the 19th, they moved up to 5200m for Troillet and Fredriksen to acclimatize and Deurient to film them; they bivouacked here. On the 20th, Troillet and Fredriksen climbed up to 6000m, where they had planned to make their second bivouac. But Troillet had a bacterial infection that he had contracted at BC and a problem with his balance. They decided on the 26th to abandon the climb and left BC the next day by helicopter. Troillet said he and Fredriksen had liked the route, but they didn't know whether they would like to try it again. Troillet would like to return to Nepal but "for some small climbs." |
