Route Notes BC in Hidden Valley north of Dhaulagiri I ABC near lake south of Tsartse C1 below SE Ridge HPt at C1. This was Lacatusu's fifth attempt on the illusive Mt. Tsartse, which is in "Hidden Valley" just north of Dhaulagiri I, and his second as team leader, and again he was unsuccessful. Does he intend to come back and try again? "We will see. Not sure now," was his answer in early December. No one else has succeeded either. The team were able to establish their base camp in Hidden Valley at 5000m, three days earlier than planned, and they made advance base camp and C1 only a few days later. But as they pitched C1 at 6100m on 28 October, the weather started deteriorating, and they never had a window for a safe summit attempt. 6100m reached by Lacatusu and Cristian Gruia turned out to be the highest point they ever managed to reach. Despite attempts to go back up, frequent new snowfall, winds of up to 70 km/hr and the risk of slab avalanches led them abandon the climb on 4 November. They left BC on the 6th. Their climbing route had been the same as Lacatusu had followed in 2006 and 2014: it involved a climb to Tashi Kang (6386m), descent to the central glacier at 6000m, a traverse of the glacier, and ascent of the final section of the SE Ridge to Tsartse's summit. One member of the small team was put out of action after the team had slept in ABC (5500m) by a serious lung infection.
