| Route Notes | Tawoche Expedition The expedition had a permit to climb Tawoche (aka Taboche). But first they made a circuit of part of Khumbu. From Namche Bazar, they trekked up the Bhote Kosi River to Thamo, Merulung and Chhule, then northeast across the Renjo La and east to Gokyo village. On 24 October all five members and three Sherpas, Nima Kancha, Pemba Tenzing and Nanda Dorje, summited Gokyo Ri from Gokyo village, then trekked to Dragnag village. On 25 October, they trekked north to a small lake south of Kangchung Peak, and made their base camp for a climb of Mt. Abi (also spelled Awi). On the 26th, Rauner, Leuzinger, Polli, and the three Sherpas climbed to the summit at 6097m via its South Ridge and slept in the lake camp that night. The team then trekked southeast, crossed the Cho La and on the 27th made their base camp for Lobuche East at 5200m. On the 29th, Leuzinger, Oswald and the three Sherpas made high camp at 5750m, and on the 30th they reached the summit at 6119m via its South Ridge in five hours from high camp. Later on the 30th, the team trekked to Pheriche. By this time, all members had bad coughs and headaches. They stayed five days in Pheriche to get better, but did not, so Rauner cancelled plans for climbing Tawoche and on 1 November they trekked to Khumjung, on the 2nd to Phakding and on the 3rd to Lukla. Sherpas: Nima/Ngima Kancha, 15/5/80, Khumjung, Everest X2 Pemba Tenzing, 6/1/68 (22/9/2044), Khumjung, Everest 21/5/07 Nanda/Naga Dorje, 30/12/66 (15/9/2023), Khumjung, Everest X3, Cho Oyu X3 |
