| Route Notes | From Swaksa Khola BC could not find a route onto glacier at bottom of mountain; big hanging glaciers and loose rock; 18th got to 17,000 ft [5180m] up Swaksa Khola and back to BC same day all 4 members together almost all of entire climb. 19th moved BC west of Khola to Yala pass at 17,600 ft [5365m], very steep to pass and snow covering rock and couldn't see what was under snow. Crossed pass and down west side then north to new BC site at 16,300 ft [4970m] just east of point 4976 on HMG map. Now started snowing that night; snowing most of rest of 3 days and snow on 21st, running short of fuel and food and porters very nervous about these problems, so left 2nd BC on 21st. Went south to Chhyandi Khola and went along khola; over Gha La (5182m) on 22nd to Chhan Khola; 23rd down Chhan Khola to Mugu Khola. 25th to Ganghadi town near Rara Lake. 27th to 29th going to Jumla. It was a long walk. Frush: "If we had not moved from Swaksa Khola would have been in real trouble with deep snow - expedition came too late; better to go in spring or early in autumn." Paid Maoists Rs 2500 for sirdar, $200 per member. |
