Route Notes BC near lake C1 on SE Face C2 below Col of East Ridge High point on East Ridge. After on BC, 3 members sick including Brunner to Pheriche because of bronchial problems and stayed 4 days and back to BC. Saw rest of expedition were already climbing. Message said they would go to C1 and return to BC (written message left - no walkie-talkies). Saw then at C1 and next day, 8 Oct saw them going above C2. On 9 Oct 7:00 am saw them at Col and then did not see; someone came running from Everest BC to say saw 4 people falling down north side of East Ridge but Brunner didn't believe and waited to see them return. Saw on man descending 3:30 pm falling to left and right. Slovenians from C1 went up to rescue (Slovenians had walkie-talkies) and found him at 17:30 at 6050m in very weak condition and near death, Slovenian doctor said and Dr. gave injection. Next morning on walkie-talkie Kijonka said they had fallen down North Face. Brunner had fever and couldn't go up and Slovenians brought him down on 11th (other 2 Czechs not really well and not strong climbers). Brunner came with him to KTM, put him on plane to Europe and back to Khumbu and met other 2 Czechs at Thyangboche. "I don't know why they kept climbing" - "I will never come back to snow peaks. I like sandstones." 7 Nov 97 - Tomaz Humar (Slovenian Pumori-Nuptse leader): bodies of Dzurman and Miscak found by Pumori summiters from Slovenia on 15 Oct smashed lying just below East Col on north side. Lenco's body went far down north side and not seen. These members and member that Slovenes reached, Kijonka, were inexperienced climbers who should not have been where they were without guide - leader was very strange.
Accidents 4 members fell: 3 died; Kijonka injured (cerebral hemorrhage, frostbitten face) and leg injuries
