| Route Notes | BC by lake (normal BC site for SE Face) ABC southeast Glacier C1 just below South Ridge. The team made an acclimatization climb on 21 October to C1, where their Sherpas had pitched four tents, but they went back to ABC the same day. On the 23rd, the members climbed around the top of the mountain's southeast glacier for practice and then went down to BC. Meanwhile, the Sherpas had spent the 22nd and 23rd fixing the route from C1 to C2 (6400m), with an Ecuadorian team and returned to C1 to sleep. The Ecuadorians climbed from C2 to the summit on the 24th; Rippel understood that it took them 15 hours and 45 minutes to reach the summit and seven hours to return to C2, and they reported that the route was very technical and too dangerous from rockfall for Rippel's members. In any case Rippel had decided on the 23rd to abandon the climb, a decision based on his own Sherpas' report by walkie-talkie that the route above C2 was too dangerous for the members. Sherpas: Jangbu, 18/6/65, Bakachol-9, Khotang, Everest X5 Palden Namgye, 20/9/72, Phortse, Everest X4, Lhotse X4, Manaslu & Annapurna I X1 Tashi Thundup, 10/4/85, Khumjung, Everest X6 |
