| Route Notes | BC by large lake at bottom of East Face ABC on serac and around a big serac slightly off route to right C1 at 100m below horizontal section of SW Ridge high point at 6260 m at southwest ridge. Clarke, Craig and Simper left C1 at 6100m to establish C2 on 28 October at 4:40 pm, hoping that from late afternoon they would be safer from falling rock than in the warmer hours of the day. However, when the reached 6260m at 7:30 pm, they became worried that when the sun came up and shone warmly, the route would be unsafe for load-carrying porters, so they abandoned their climb and turned around. Craig descended to BC, while Clarke and Simper stopped in C1 that night. All were in BC on the 29th. The expedition's climb was over. Craig had gone to ABC and 100m above it on the 20th, when a bad chest infection caused him to retreat to BC and next day to Pheriche to recover. Fully recovered, he returned to BC on the 24th. The leader, Berg, stayed in BC for the entire climbing period. Lingafelter also did not go above BC. She had a bad headache from the altitude, went to Pheriche with Craig, returned on the 25th and remained in BC. |
