Campsites BC(24/10,5200m),C1(02/11,6160m),xxx(09/11,6550m)
Route Notes BC at 5300m near smaller lake at Gorak Shep C1 at 6160m on Col of SSW Ridge Very difficult to find flat spot for a camp. C1 site dug into 60-degree slope and took a whole day to dig into it. 9 Nov Maselko and Van der Spek up from C1 fixed ropes at 6520m and Maselko leading and Van der Spek belaying Maselko fixed rope 30m higher when Van der Spek on walkie-talkie said to Maselko said his feet very cold and he was going down. Clouds came over, got cold and windy and snow started falling - both down to C1. Now Sherpa had gone home and not available to carry rope for fixing, many members tired, Castelnuovo had to leave to meet trekkers. Only three people left who were technically competent to do job of making route (only competent ones were Maselko, Pawlowski, Castelnuovo and Van der Spek) and needed 2 teams of 2 competent people to alternate fixing rope. So on 10th took down some of ropes and all gear and climb finished. Route technically difficult and steep. Morrow left expedition 5 Nov as route too steep for him. Puhl left 8 Nov because he had to go back to work.
