| Route Notes | C1 used ABC site as their C1 C2 by Sloezen and Kloos C3 on the "Dome" above icefall. Worsham, Noorani, Sloezen, Kloos, Cox, Hickory and Bennett all went above C1, but only Sloezen and Kloos went to C2. The others found the climbing too difficult. Most of the group arrived in KTM on 13 May. Bob and Heidi arrived 21 May. Heidi and Bob left for summit and reached the top at 10:30 am. They spent the night at C3 after reaching summit. On the way down Bob cleared the mountain of all 400m of fixed rope and about 300m of Austrian rope as well. He says he had a great climb!! Tsering (Sirdar) - lives in Kathmandu, went to 6000m Daily Journal: May 3, 2000 Life on Pumori is getting more exciting. The climbers have begun to move up the mountain and the rest of the group are doing their best to ensure the team's success. Today the climbers have made their way all the way to the C2. It has been difficult to get them that high due to the high winds up on Pumori. The climbers estimate the wind speed at over 60 mph. These are very difficult conditions to climb in. One climber said that one of the problems is that climbers are actually lifted into the air. Good thing climbers are wearing climbing harnesses and clipped into safety lines! Once the climbers make camp at C3, they will make their way to the summit. The climbing team will leave well before dawn in order to get to the of Pumori by mid-day. The team then will quickly descent perhaps making their way all the way back to camp one. The rest of the team will monitor the progress of the climbers through radio contact. The climbing team and base camp group use walkie talkies to talk to one another. This communication is very important. Since the team is so high on Pumori it is very difficult for the people at base camp to watch their progress. By conversing on radios the two group have immediate updates. Meanwhile at base camp the rest of the group are working on journal entries, curriculum and basically keeping track of the climbing team. A few schools in the Chicago area have received calls from the team. |
