Route Notes Approach:: Flight to Bhadrapur, jeep to Ranipul via Taplejung, trek to Pangpema BC. BC 28/09 5150m nearby Pangpema on Kangchenjunga north side HC 01/10 5408m on Pathibara Glacier C1 12/10 5747m in the icefall C2 13/10 5800m in the icefall Smt 14/10 by Leal Barrientos and all Sherpas at 1:50 pm. Team climbed Drohmo Peak from BC to 5970m for acclimatization. Snow storm hit team in BC at the start of October, halting their progression for some days. Pathibara Southeast quite hidden and rarely visible from much of the approach. Sherpas fixed a total of approx. 1000m rope: 300m in between C1 and C2, and again higher up on the SW Ridge and about 100m on the final summit ridge. Most dangerous part was icefall in between C1 and C2, almost 500m of crevasses, hardly any elevation gain from C1 to C2. Most difficult part from a technical point of view was the ridge above C2 to the top. Difficulty estimated by team as: TD/7; comparable to Ama Dablam. Descent same as ascent, a few rappels on the descent in between summit and C2. Summit push started on 11/10: BC to HC. On 12/10: HC to C1. On 13/10: C1 to C2 in the morning. On 14/10: Everyone set off from C2 at 1 am. Kunga Gyaju and Lhakpa Chiring started a bit earlier as they were fixing the ropes and finding the best way. On the summit at 1:50 pm, they stayed on the top for about 30 minutes. Amazing weather, no wind, only few clouds. After summit down to C2 for the night, arrival at 8-9 pm. On 15/10 down to BC. Left BC on 16/10. Climbing route: SW Ridge Oxygen: Taken for emergency to BC, not used. Fixed rope: ca. 1000m Records: First Ascent Other peaks: Drohmo Ri (ca. 5900m) just next to BC for acclimatization. Measured altitude of Pathibara Southeast by team: 6686m.
