| Route Notes | From Kathmandu Post (Nov 1994) Kathmandu - In the [second] biggest disaster of mountaineering history in Nepal, 9 Germans, a Swiss national and a Nepalese mountain guide were found dead presumably due to snowslide. After a continuous three-day search, November 16, 17, 18, the bodies of the mountaineers were located 6091 meters below Pisang Peak in Manang district on Sunday. They are said to have successfully have reached the peak. According to Rotheingshofer Sigmund of the German Alpine Club which undertook the rescue mission, the members of the team should have returned to base camp in the same day, but were found missing. The people in Kathmandu received information about them on Nov 14 afternoon when someone from base camp made contact with police headquarters. The headquarters informed the local handling agent International Trekkers Pvt Ltd. Trekkers could not start their search immediately as Nov 15 was election day and the helicopter was not available, says Phintso [Lama] of the company. A helicopter with a rescue team started the search operation only on Nov 16 and was able to locate the dead bodies on Saturday. According to Phinsto, the next stage of retreiving the bodies is scheduled for Monday. Four German mountaineering experts and four Sherpa guides are included in the mission. "The team will bring down the bodies of the mountaineers to base camp within a few days," Phintso said, adding that the corpses will be flown to Kathmandu and possibly be sent to Germany. The trekking-cum-expedition team, led by DAV Summit Club mountain guide Stefan Hasenkopf, included Germans Manfred Mack, 50, of Munich, engineer Karl Gluck, 48, of Florbachtal, Klaus Kaindl, 42, of Mittenwald, Bernd Reiss, 42, of Nidda, Werner Nestl, 58, of Berlin, forester Thomas Philipp, 39, of Nurenberg, pharmacist Sybille Zschetzsche, 40, of Berlin, tour guide Stefan Hasenkopf, 25, of Nussdoeff and Helmut Klopping, 47, of Seigen. The Swiss national was Christine Hammi, 33, of Basel while the Nepali Sirdar was Chayamba Sherpa, 41, of Dimber-9, Solukhumbu. An official of International Trekkers has said that the team DAV Lamjung/Annapurna had left for the trek on October 30 morning and was scheduled to return by flight from Jomsom on Nov 22 before this disaster took place. According to information provided by Trekkers, the route of the tour passes through north of Pokhara valley via Rambrong Peak and follows the trail around Annapurna and the range of the Marsyangdi river banks. The area is less frequented by normal trekkers and the trip itself has been graded as "strenuous" suitable for trekkers with fairly good climbing skills and with excellent physical conditions. From Spotlight (November 25, 1994) (excerpted) On the evening of Nov 14, International Trekkers of Kathmandu was informed by the police headquarters that the mountaineers were missing from the previous day. The company officials then contacted the concerned authorities to launch search-rescue operations as soon as possible. But they could not manage any flights for immediate help on Nov 15 as it was the polling day. However on Nov 16 International Trekkers dispatched a rescue team which searched for the missing mountaineers around Pisang Peak but it did not pay. After three consecutive days of search, the rescue squad was able to locate the bodies of the mountaineers which were found lying in a single heap at 5200-5300 meters of the peak. After the sighting of the bodies, there have been some speculations as to how the accident might have occurred. "The accident may have been caused by a snow-slide which may have 'swept down' all the climbers 'together'," said Phintso Lama, managing director of International Trekkers. |
