Route Notes Approach: Besisahar->Marshyangdi->Buri Gandaki->Samdo, E on N side of Sonam Glacier. The team went by bus to Besisahar and trekked north up the Marshyangdi River to the Buri Gandaki River, north along the Buri Gandaki to Samdo village, east alng the north side of the Sonam Glacier to BC. BC was pitched on 2 September at 4330m on the north side of the glacier and C1 on 11 September 270m higher along the glacier near its bends to the north and then again towards the east. C2 was placed on 14 September on Samdo's NNE Ridge, which forms the border with Tibet, at a col at 5600m. They left C2 for top at 4:15 am on 20 September and all members were on the summit at 10:20 am. The ridge was not difficult: it was covered with good snow and not sharp. They descended to C2 at 1:15 pm. The team then, on the 21st, made a camp on the same ridge north of Samdo at 5900m, and the next day they tried to proceed directly to Panpoche, which is southwest of Samdo. But now snow was falling, and all the members were tired, so instead they descended to BC. On the 25th, Kameoka, Kotani and Yamamoto returned to C1, which was northwest of Samdo on the glacier at 4600m. On the 26th, they made a camp at 5900m, and on the 27th they went to Samdo's 6335m summit and along its West Ridge to 6400m, but then turned back to their camp at 5900m. They had expected to summit Panpoche and then return to the camp; they had taken no tent with them that day. On the 28th the other three members arrived at 5900m with two more tents. And on the 30th the whole team moved southwest from Samdo and reached 6500m on Panpoche's NE Ridge. Here they had to turn back: the rock ridge was covered in places by unstable snow, which broke off under their feet. So back to 5900m and the climb was finished. They had fixed 650 meters of rope between BC and C1, and 50m more above C2.
