Route Notes BC at grassy area near west ridge side of Glacier (3-4 hrs from Dingboche) ABC at start of West Ridge Biv on West Ridge High point on West Ridge. The team decided to acclimatize on the West Ridge. They made an advance base camp at 6900m at the start of the ridge and "went up and down a few times" from ABC in their acclimatization. On 4 November, Gilmore, Mahoney and Wilkinson bivouacked at 6300m on the ridge. The next day, they descended to BC. A wind was blowing; there was technical snow climbing ahead, so they needed more snow pickets; and there was a lot of crevasses on a very long ridge (ABC was at last three kilometers from the summit). They decided to abandon the climb. They went back up to ABC on the 6th to bring down their gear and left BC on the 7th. They had originally planned to go to Nuptse's summit via its South Face, but they found that melting snow was running down the face and loosening rocks. Richards left the team slightly early. He had learned about the death of Chhewang Nima Sherpa in an avalanche on Baruntse, and this upset him enough that he decided to quit. He left the expedition on 3 November.
