Route Notes Bumann - 8 Nov 81 Planned route was (NNE) North Ridge, not same as 1980 Japanese according to porter with both expeditions. Porters said Japanese went only to point 6595m north-northwest of Numbur; did not go beyond because too long. BC at Tsho Og Lake (same site as Japanese at 4800m) C1 at 4950m at "d" in Lumding Glacier of Schneider map on 21 Oct. Stopped at 5700m west of C1 on 23 Oct by Salzmann and Supersaxo. Stopped attempt because route too difficult long and technically difficult and dangerous from seracs falling. Intended to reach point 6595m and then point 6656m to summit. Would take 2-3 weeks and require more climbing equipment and time then expedition had; season finished 31 Oct. Initially planned to climb NNE Ridge but too dangerous from ice avalanches so moved westwards repeating Japanese route towards point 6595m. Looked at North Face, but too many seracs. No accidents, etc. Bumann - 14 Oct 81 Approach from Lukla via Moro La and Lumding Kharka village BC near Lumding Tsho lake at 4800m Route = North Ridge (same as Japanese 1980? to NW Ridge) Leave KTM 16 Oct by air to Lukla (baggage went by porters). 2 or 3 camps on mountain depending on place for camps, highest at about 6200m. 3 Sherpas above BC. Medical oxygen only. Return to KTM 7 Nov.
