| Route Notes | BC (biv) north-northeast of Norbu Kang C1 (biv) in a valley northeast of mountain. German Dolpo Expedition 2008 to Norbu Kang led by Goetz Wiegand - 22 July 2008 The expedition's main reason for coming to Dolpo was a filming project at several gompas by a separate film team. But it also gave Wiegand an opportunity to see Dolpo, whee he had never been before. Two members of the climbing team actually did no climbing: Bossdorf and Grambow. Instead of going to Norbu Kang with Wiegand, Langer and Voigtlaender, they stayed at Dho Tarap village, where the film team made their headquarters to film the important Champa Gompa. Kern also did not climb. He got a high fever of unknown cause which was not cured by antibiotics, so he left expedition on 4 July. His was the only illness among the climbing team, who had no accidents or frostbite. The climbing and filming teams flew from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj on 23 June and to Juphal airfield for Dunai on the 24th. Their first goal was Dho Tarap village, where they made their base for filming Champa Gompa and climbing Norbu Kang. From Dunai they trekked southeast to Heutaghar, Paria Gompa, spent two days at Paria Gompa for filming it, then to Tarap Khola and north to Dho Tarap, from where the film team did their work while the three climbers went to Norbu Kang; they arrived at Dho Tarap on 2 July. On the 4th of July, the climbing trio trekked south-southwest to the Mirguwane Khola for access to Norbu Kang via its valley. But when they moved up the valley, local people told them that the valley was impassable farther up because of its narrowness and landslides. So they retraced their steps to the Tarap Khola and moved northwest beside this stream to Tok-Khyu village. Then south-southwest across a few gentle ridges to an place where they pitched their single tent for their climb of Norbu Kang. On the next day, the 5th, they took their tent with them as they trekked into a valley and pitched the tent on a spot that was still 1.5 km from the NE Face of the mountain they thought was Norbu Kang. On the 6th, the three men left their "high camp" at 7:00 am and climbed this NE Face to 5600m, then moved left to the east ridge because they saw rocks falling from the face. They had no helmets and felt it was safer to get away from rock falls. When they reached the top via the ridge at 2:00 pm, they say a mountain four or five km. away towards the south. This mountain's summit was covered in cloud, but it gave the appearance of being 100-150 meters higher than where they were standing. Wiegand thinks that other peak belonged to Norbu Kang. But they had no time to go to find out; their schedule was ruled by the film's team's program. In any case they probably did not have sufficient climbing gear with them, and Langer and Voigtlaender were not skilled enough to attempt it. They descended from their unnamed summit to their high camp site at 5200m via the East Ridge to a small valley near the area of their camp, which they reached at 5:30 pm. They slept there that night, and on the 7th they were back at 4500m, where they had had their first camp. They returned to Champa Gompa near Dho Tarap. On 9 July the five climbing members plus the film team set out in search of Shey Gompa and Shey Shikhar, the climber's other intended mountain goal. They trekked northwest along the Jangla Khola to the Jangla La (Pass) and on the 10th went north-northwest to Nagung Khola and Saldang vilage. On the 11th they turned southwest to the Namgu Gompa on the Namgu Khola. On the 12th they crossed the Gelu La to Shey Gompa. Next day they crossed the Kang La to Phoksundo Khola, which drains north from Phoksundo (or Ringmo) Lake. On the 14th, the climbers trekked for an hour or two westward to look for Shey Shikar somewhere nearby. They could see nothing in the monsoon clouds. Anyway they had no time to attempt a real climb. They returned to Phoksundo Khola without having been able to make a reconnaissance of the mountain. On the 15th they went south to Ringmo village: now they were on their way back to Kathmandu. They arrived in Dunai on the 18th, on the 19th in Juphal, and on the 20th flew from Juphal to Nepalgunj and on to Kathmandu the same day. |
