Route Notes Expeditions to Himlung prior to 1992 were probably climbing Nemjung. BC at Pokutal ABC at head of glacier C1 at couloir system (but not in a couloir) High point at left side of South Ridge. From ABC climbed an icefall under S Ridge and above that into couloir system leading to W Spur of S Ridge. Worked on route until 16th Dec, when started to make summit attempts; is a long route. Made C2 at 5400m but not permanent camp and others had slept higher. No good place for camps on narrow ridge below 6000m; lower sites very places for a tent. Etherington went solo on 17th from ABC for a summit bid of possible and got to 6050m up couloir to left of S Ridge and right of seracs. At 6050m got too steep and he came down; reached high point at 4:00 am on 19th having climbed through the night. No bad winds during climb. 1 member reached BC 19th, had had enough and left BC 21st. In descent met 2 going up and told them no point in going up; anyway they could see clouds coming into bring snowfall. Turned back at 5600m, reached C1 on 19th, ABC 20th, BC 21st. On 21st night snow fall began. Was quite a lot of rock fall as snow melted; falling rock got very bad the longer they stayed, made hole in Emerson's rucksack and cut same ropes. Put ropes in parts of couloir and spur. The sign post on this route is the pinnacle that stands out at top of spur.
