Route Notes E Ridge route was first climbed by Wilfried Studer from Austria in 1985. It joins the normal route on the NE Face above C3. Diary compiled from the Tokyo University of Agriculture Manaslu Expedition site: 27 Aug: team arrived at normal NE Face BC 4800m. 29 Aug: puja 30-31 Aug: route reconnaissance. 1 Sept: lower route preparation. 2-6 Sept: carried gear to C1 site (5500m), rain days. 7 Sept: moved to C1. 8 Sept: fixed route and carry to C2 site (6000m). 9 Sept: carried to C2 site, fixed route toward C3 site (6600m). 10-11 Sept: rest days. 12 Sept: moved to C1. 13 Sept: moved to C2. 14-15 Sept: carried to C3 site, returned to BC. 16-17 Sept: rest days. 18 Sept: moved to C1. 19 Sept: moved to C2. 20 Sept: moved to C3. 21 Sept: carried to C4 (attack camp). 22 Sept: returned to BC. 23-24 Sept: rest days. 25 Sept: moved to C2 from BC. 26 Sept: moved to C3. 27 Sept: carried to depot pts at 7270m and 7330m. 28 Sept: returned to BC. 29 Sept-Oct 1: rest days. 2 Oct: moved to C2. 3 Oct: moved to C3. 4 Oct: stayed at C3 (due to weather). 5 Oct: moved to C4. First summit bid from C4 on 6 Oct by all six members. They turned back at 7600m due to high winds and bad visibility. Hasegawa used oxygen. Second summit bid from C4 on 7 Oct by Takano and Onodera with oxygen; the other four returned to C3. Takano and Onodera summited at 13:35 on 7 Oct. Onodera slipped and fell to his death while positioning himself to video Takano on the summit. Takano descended to C3 arriving at 5 pm. After accident report, Nishide returned to BC while other three waited for Takano at C3. 8 Oct all five returned to BC. Subsequent searches by team members and by helicopter on 9 Oct failed to find the body of Onodera due to bad weather. Remaining team members departed BC on 12 Oct.
