Route Notes BC 24/04 4850m HPt 25/04 5650m by Volken and Gschwendtner. We started from Kathmandu to Arughat by bus, from there to Samagaon we had 16 mules to carry our gear and stayed some days more in Samagaon because a lot of snow and dangers of avalanche on the way to basecamp. Kilian Volken and I were the first to go up to Manaslu BC and we found the camp from the Italian climber Simone Moro, who tried to do a winter ascent of Manaslu. We descended to Samagaon the same day. We went back to BC on 24 April and on 25 April we were intending to go to C1. The walk was easy and the conditions are very well. At about 5650m Volken wanted to stop as it was foggy and we could not see so much. We prepared a depot camp to leave some equipment there. We were just about to go down when we heard a big avalanche and rocks falling. We ran for cover and managed to dodge the avalanche. After a while they spoke to a French team by radio and realized that it was an earthquake. They descended to BC the same day.
