| Route Notes | The summit party of Arnette, Carstens, Crampton and Samuel with Sherpas Changba Nurbu, Pasang Nima, Pasang Wangchu and Tarke left for the top from C4 at 3:10 am on 25 September. All reached the summit, but they were not together. Crampton and Pasang Nima summited at 8:30 am; Arnette and Pasang Wangchu at 9:00 am; Carstens, Samuel, Tarke and Changba Nurbu at 9:30 am. All except Crampton descended to C1 while Crampton carried on to BC to be examined by the British Gurkhas team's medic. Crampton fell into a crevasse when a crevasse's snow bridge collapsed under him while he was descending to C2 carrying his personal gear and four oxygen bottles each weighing 3 kg. He fell 15 meters and was stopped by the oxygen bottles, which wedged him between the sides of the crevasse. He was pulled up to the surface after an hour and a half; he had lost a crampon and could not climb out of it by himself, but he kept warm in the down suit he was wearing and with his oxygen supply. He was found by the medic's examination to be uninjured except for a lot of painful bruises. Oxygen was used by all members and Sherpas in the summit party in C4 to the top and down to but not in C2 (except for Crampton, who used it to BC). Non-summiting members: Francois got to C4 on 24 September, but he was too tired to go for the top and instead descended to C1 on the 25th. Moore also reached C4 on the 24th, but was too tired to go on up and went down to C1 on the 25th. Newton developed a case of altitude sickness as he reached C3 on the 23rd that could have become really serious if he hadn't gone down to BC that same day. He stayed in BC until the climb was finished. Sherpas: Changba Nurbu, 1964, Tate, Solu, Everest X9, Cho Oyu X1, Dhaulagiri X2, Manaslu X2 Pasang Nima, 28/1/74, Chaurikharka, Solu, Everest X2, Manaslu X1 Pasang Wangchu, 25/4/87, Cheremy, Bung, Solu, Everest X3, Manaslu X2 Tarke, 1967, Rakshi Kharka, Lokhim, Solu, Everest X4, Manaslu X3, Cho Oyu X4, Lhotse X1 |
