| Route Notes | Domi Sherpa (the mountain guide), Hill, Lechner and Sichert abandoned climb early due to avalanche. Families were worried for their safety. They left base camp on 25 Sept and went back to Germany 26 Sept. Pade left base camp 29 Sept at 8:00 am for C2 and he arrived at C2 at 2:00 pm. There he waited and rested until 11:00 pm when Boehm and Haag arrived at C2. Then they all left camp and together at 11:30 pm for the summit. At around 1:30-2:00 pm Pade decided to turn around (he was about 80m below the summit) and skied down (arrived at BC around 6:30-7pm on 30 Sept). Haag left base camp on 29 Sept at 6:00 pm arrived C2 at 11:30 pm and picked up Pade to continue on to summit. Climbed through night to try to summit. On 30 Sept at 12:30 (100m below the summit), he decided to turn around and ski down. He was cold and tired. He turned back knowing he needed the energy to ski down, arrived at BC at 6:30-7 pm. Boehm left base camp on 29 Sept at 6:00 pm with Haag, arrived at C2 to pick up Pade around 11:30-12:00 pm and then continued on to climb. He made it to the summit at 11:00 am, left the summit at 11:25 pm (he was on summit for 25 minutes), then decided to ski down and arrived at BC 6:30-7:00 pm on 30 Sept. Ski-down descent details: Snow conditions very bad. They started to ski down from where Pade decided to turn around (8050m) to C4 (7400m). At C4 the skiers thought they would have to put on crampons and climb down, because on the way up there was a lot of black ice. However after the fixed rope below C4 they realized they could continue to ski down (big ramp to the side side of the fixed rope) and at 7000m they traversed to C3. From C3 there was a lot of debris from the accident and had to be careful not to fall. From C2 to C1 it was very warm and the snow bridges were melting and breaking and the snow was soft (skied all the way until the end of the glacier to the skiers' left side (10 minutes from base camp). Skied every where except 100m vertical from C4 (7400m) until 7300m. Skiing the first 100m vertical from summit, thinks it is possible to ski down the entire mountain. Note: This team originally intended to climb Cho Oyu, but switched to Manaslu since Cho Oyu was closed for the season. |
