| Route Notes | Marc Mary went up at C2 on the 23rd of September, but was forced to go down back to BC after the avalanche. After that most the teams at BC were pessimistic: 80 percent of them left due to the mountain guides or leader agencies decisions, with a lot of helicopter flights from the day after. On the 30th of September, Marc Mary slept well at C4 with oxygen, but had not recovered enough. (n fact Mary wanted to use the snail technique but had to carry too much from BC to C4, his old personnal equipment being too heavy (shoes 4 kgs, bag 4 Kgs). So when at 3 am his Sherpa proposed to him to try for the summit, Marc Mary just said no and both went down on the 1st of October. But what Mary didn't know is that for his Sherpa, his "no" meant that the expedition was over. On the contrary, Marc Mary took a long period for his expedition to have more attempts, so he was a bit disappointed when his Sherpa told him it was finished when both were back at the BC. Sherpa: Lama Babu Sherpa, (2035/6/8) 24 Sept 1978, Cheremy, Bung-9, Solu Oxygen: In theory Marc Mary had 2 oxygen bottles, one for the way up from 7000m, one for the way down from the summit to 7000m. But in fact, he used this oxygen as well to sleep at C4. |
