| Route Notes | Kang, Kim Joo-Hyung, Kim Mi-Gon, Park, Yun, Sanu and Chinjung Bhote started from C3 at 10 pm on 22 April. Same time other independent Korean climber Kim Hong-Bin with two Sherpas too started from C3. Kim Joo-Hyung (expedition leader) turned around from about 7700m on 23 April and had to bivouac between C2 and C1. He reached BC on 24 April. Chinjung Bhote also turned around from about 7700m and waited in C1 for other members. Park turned around from 8000m on 22 April. He was very tired and decided not to continue. Three members Kang, Kim Mi-Gon, Yun and Sanu continued climbing. They reached just below the summit 8100m (email of Kang) on 23 April at around 1 or 2 pm. Suddenly, it became a white-out. The team waited for a while for clear weather, but it did not improve. Kim Mi-Gon said he saw the summit at some clear moment which was very near, but he could not say how near it was. The place where he stood was not the summit. The weather remained very bad and white-out continued. Then the climbers started descending and bived at 8000m together (Kang, Kim Mi-Gon, Yun, Sanu and other independent Korean climber Kim Hong-Bin and his two Sherpas). On the way down on 23 April, Kang reached around 7600m where Park was bivouacking Kang too bived there. Kang got frostbite in all fingers. Park also had frostbite in both hands and feet. He had thrown awy his gloves. Kang could not help Park to move down. Because Park was extremely exhausted and there was no strength to move by himself with frostbitten hands and legs. Kang continued his descend alone on 24 and reached at around 7100m in white-out and bived there. He managed to reach C3 on 25 April at around 11 am and to C2 on 26 April at about 6 am. He was rescued from C2 by helicopter to Samagaon and same day flown to Kathmandu by helicopter. He had treatment at Norvic Hospital. He left Kathmandu on 27 April. Kim Joo-Hyung turned around from about 7700m and bived between C2-C1 on 23 April. He reached BC on 24 April. Kim Joo-Hyung returned to Kathmandu on 8 May and left for Korea on 9 May. Kim Mi-Gon (climbing Leader) climbed up to 8050m (email of Kang). On descent he bived at 8000m with fellow climbers. He did not see Park while descending. He was at C3 on 24 April and on 25 in C2. He was exhausted and rescued from C2 by helicopter on 26 April. He left Kathmandu on 3 May. His left toes had minor frostbite. Park turned around from 8000m on 22 April due to tiredness. He stopped and bived at around 7600m. Kang bived with Park on 23 April. Park's both hands and feet were frostbitten. He was left alone there, because Kang with frostbitten hands and himself exhausted could not help Park to move down. Yun climbed up to 8100m with Kang and Kim Mi-Gon and Sanu. Yun bived at 8000m with his fellow climbers on 23 April. On 24 April while descending, Yun saw Park around 7600m and communicated to BC by walkie-talkie that he is trying to help Park to go down. The last heard from Yun was around 8 pm. After that nobody saw him. Cha, Lee and Shin remained in BC. They left BC on 13 April and Kathmandu on 20 April (according to Wangchu Sherpa of Trekking Camp). The fixed line put up by the expedition team was swept away by avalanche on 15 April. Note: The above information was given to me by Kang Yeon-Ryong on 2/6/2020 when he returned to Kathmandu to sort out pending works of the expedition. The altitudes are noted in approximation. The French expedition which summited Manaslu on 25 May 2010 found a dead Korean body (Park Haeng-Su) at 7500m. Pasquer of French expedition has sent a photo of the dead body. Accident: Kang both hands frostbitten. Kim Mi-Gon left toes frostbitten Park dead Yun missing Sherpas: Sanu Sherpa, 30/4/75, Walung, Makalu-Barun, Cho Oyu X2, Everest X2, Lhotse X1 Chinjung Bhote, 8/2/92 (25/10/2048), Hatiya-1 |
