Route Notes On 1 October, the two-member team pitched C1 at 5700m and moved on up in an acclimatization climb. From an area of a lot of seracs at 5900m, a few small blocks of ice camp down. At 11:00 am Karnicar was 150m above Oderlap, and when he looked back, he didn't see his teammate. He descended to see where Oderlap was and found him in critical condition. Oderlap did not respond to any attempt to communicate with him; blood was coming from his mouth and an ear. Apparently an ice block had gravely injured him. Karnicar tried to carry Oderlap to C1, but at 85 kilos (187 pounds), Oderlap was too heavy for him. Five Frenchman (led by Michel Vincent) came up to 5450m on their way to the top, and they stopped and helped carry Oderlap down to C1 at 4:00 pm; he was still alive. Karnicar's cook with five Sherpas he had recruited reached C1 with oxygen, and by 3:30 am of 2 October, they had moved Oderlap to the beginning of a glacier at 5100m, where a rescue helicopter could land. A helicopter came as far as BC only and immediately returned to Kathmandu. Now 12 local people came to carry him to BC at 11:00 am. Only on the next day, the 3rd, did the helicopter return, arriving at BC at 8:00 am and landing at Kathmandu airport. At 9:30 am an ambulance delivered him to Norvic hospital in the city. Doctors said he had died one and a half hours prior to this arrival at the hospital. Oderlap's body was being sent to his family in Slovenia.
