Route Notes C2 at lower than normal, safer from avalanche C3 under huge icefall - sheltered by it C4 needed a C4 because C2 & C3 low. The team made their first summit attempt on 13 May. Dieber, Laemmle, Otto and Trinkner left C4 at 3:30 am but turned around two hours later at 7650m because of strong wind and went back to C4. The same day Dieber and Lenz went all the way to C2 because they were very tired. On the 14th Laemmle, Otto and Trinkner were still in C4, but Trinkner didn't feel well, so he stayed in the camp when Laemmle and Otto left for the top at 4:00 am, accompanied by the independent Kazakhstani climber Maxut Zhumayev. They had had to wait a couple of hours for the wind to abate. The two Germans were on the summit at 12:00 noon (more than two hours after Zhumayev) and returned to C4 at 4:30 pm. On the 15th all members were in C2 and in BC on the 16th. They left BC on 17 May. Laemmle had arrived late at BC because work in Germany. He came on 26 April in a helicopter sent to rescue a Japanese climber. The team's only health problem was a problem Trinkner developed in the retina of his right eye. His sight in that eye became fuzzy, but it is slowly improving. Fixed rope: last 200m to C4.
