| Route Notes | BC at junction of Chago and Barun Glacier C1 at south end of rock island C2 at bottom of steepness C3 at Makalu La High point at C3. C3 occupied by Jorgensen and Nima Rita but they went no higher because of strong wind and deep crust covered snow above. They went there again later to make summit bid if that not possible to remove gear, which they did. Lyhne died of cerebral hemorrhage or heart failure of some sort. Got to C1 an hour before his tentmate on 12th, eating well that day, no indication of illness. With his death "on spirit was changed." Died at 4:30 am on 13th in the tent; body brought to Kathmandu by helicopter on 15th (without any member escorting it), stored in German Embassy's freezer till it could be sent to Denmark, where it now is. |
