Route Notes Above information from trekking agent friendly to Strynoe, Padma Shrestha of Sherpa Cooperative Trekking. Zangrilli of UK-US Makalu expedition, whose permit Strynoe climbed on said Strynoe, "very strange" man, did not socialize much at ABC. Insisted on climbing alone and even made his own route above ABC. He had made a depot at 5000m by the time Zangrilli arrived at BC, but don't know if he made higher camps nor how high he reached, though it seemed he did not much above 6000m. He told Zangrilli he had been at Makalu for one month when Zangrilli arrived on 27 April (Shrestha explains Strynoe had gone to BC areas thinking he would be on Italian expedition's permit, but that expedition was cancelled and he had to wait for Hinkes' people to arrive). In BC 2nd to 30th April waiting for permit to arrive 1st May to ABC just before big icefall. 3rd to C1. 4th Down to ABC to collect more gear. 5th rested. 6th to C1. 7th to ABC again. 8th rested. 9th to C1. 10th to ABC. Rested and bad weather till 14th when went to C1. 15th to C2 site to leave gear and returned to C1 same day. 16th to C2 to stay. 17th down to C1 to collect gear and returned to C2. 18th C2 to 6900m & back to C2 because snowstorm. 19th ABC in bad weather. 22nd to C2. 23rd to C1 & back to C2. 26th to 7050m in more bad weather (so cloudy no visibility) and back to C2. 28th to ABC because of bad weather & food running out. 29th to C2. 30th to 7300m and back to C2 because cloudy and too late in the day. 31st down to ABC and now no time for more climbing. Was on Hinkes' permit but an independent climber; sometimes climbed with others who were on mountain at same time.
