Route Notes Nirmal Purja summited Everest twice and Lhotse once, before coming to Makalu. On 30 May in the early morning, Purja took a helicopter back to Lukla from Namche, picked up four Sherpas and flew to Makalu BC, where they arrived at 7:41 am. ABC 30/05 5700m (7:41 am) C1 30/05 6650m (5:20 pm, spent the night there) C2 31/05 7450m (5:30 pm, spent a few hours there) Smt 01/06 by Purja, Walung Dorje, Mingma Dorje and Jangbu at 9:20 am. They left ABC at 10:15 am to C2, arrived at 5:20 pm. It took them a relatively long time because they had to break trail in knee-deep snow. They used the existing fixed ropes on the headwall below C2 and up to the Makalu La. They carried 300m of rope, ice screws and snowbars and tents. Left C2 at 9 am. They were not using oxygen up to about 7400m, but Purja decided to put everyone on oxygen from there as they were going to slowly. They reached C3 at 5:30 pm. They pitched their tent. The weather was horrendous. Very windy again. Purja, Mingma Dorje, Jangbu and Walung Dorje left C3 at 10:30 pm. They went up via C4, but lost the route for a bit and did not use the lower traverse to the French couloir. They traversed across higher up. At 7:26 am they reached the couloir. The rope in the French Couloir was still usable and was not as buried as on the rest of the route. They spent about 15 minutes on the summit and descended to C3, where they arrived at 1:30 pm. Rested for a few hours and descended to ABC, where they arrived at 5:30 pm. On 2 June they waited for a helicopter, but no heli due to bad weather. On 3 June they left ABC by foot at 3 pm and after having walked the whole night, they arrived at Num at 9 am the following day. From Num to Tumlingtar by jeep on 4 June and back to Kathmandu on 4 June. Oxygen: taken and used from 7400m to summit to C2 by all.
