Route Notes BC 16/04 4800m ABC 19/04 5700m C1 -- C2 22/04 6800m C3 29/04 7400m C4 18/05 7870m by Horn on the descent after summitting Smt 17/05 by Roux at 10:34 am; Horn at 4:20 pm. Like many other teams, Horn and Roux reached C2 on 15 May. While most other climbers returned to ABC due to high winds on the route to the Makalu La on 16 May, they waited until midday and ascended to the Makalu La, where they arrived at around 5 pm. They started for their summit attempt from C3 at 11 pm. It was clear, but very cold. As Roux was a lot faster than Horn, they separated and Roux went ahead. In front of him were the rope-fixing Sherpas from Seven Summit Treks and four Indians; however, they ran out of rope at about 200m below the summit and turned back at around 9 am. Roux went on and used some of the old fixed rope and reached the summit at 10:34 am. He only stayed on the summit for about one minute ans started his descent. At about midday he bumped into Horn and the German climber Florian Huebschenberger, who had just reached the bottom of the French Couloir. As Roux started to have problems breathing, it was important to him to get down as quickly as possible and went all the way down to ABC, where he arrived at 9 pm. Horn reached the summit at 4:20 pm and spent about one hour on the summit to take photos and film. On the way down, Horn stayed at C4 (in Al Hancock's tent of Seven Summits), where he arrived at around 8 pm. On 18 May Horn descended to ABC, where he arrived at 2 pm. Oxygen: Not taken, not used
