Vajpai started his summit attempt on 13 May. He reached C1 on 13 May, C2 on 14 May, C3 on 15 May and C4 on 16 May. He was together with Mane and Mali from India from Peak Promotion and Biswas from Seven Summit Treks. Seven rope-fixing Sherpas from Seven Summit Treks were with them and they were supposed to fix the rope ahead of them. Vajpai had been reassured that there were 360m of rope at the bottom of the French Couloirs and that it would be enough to reach the summit. However, when they reached their high point at about 8400m at 9 am, the Sherpas had run out of fixed rope and the climbers were told to turn back. It was difficult for Vajpai as he was feeling fine and had enough oxygen to reach the summit. "Now I know what if feels like to turn back so near the summit" he said. He turned back and descended to C3, where he arrived at about 2 pm. He stayed the night and descended to ABC on 18 May where he arrived at 11 am. Patil reached C2 on 22 April. She had troubles with her knee and left ABC by helicopter on 26 April. Oxygen: Taken and used from C2 to high point to ABC by Vajpai From C4 to high point to C4 by Sherpas |
