Route Notes The team attempted the normal NW Ridge route in general, but they took a shortcut from C1 at the bottom of the West Face through an ice field. Between C1 and C2 there was a lot of loose snow, and they had to wait for the avalanching to stop. They returned to BC for four days. From 17 to 19 September, Satke and Stahringer tried a route that led them to the rock band and then traversed to the normal route to the Makalu La. This effort took them two days. (They slept in C3 on the 18th.) On the 19th Stahringer started an avalanche below the Makalu La which took him down 600m and partially buried him. Satke was at the Makalu La; he down-climbed and in one hour dug out his teammate with just his hands. Stahringer was bruised and exhausted, but no bones were broken. The next day, the 20th, the others in C2 moved up and joined Satke and Stahringer, helped them to descend to C2 that day and to ABC the following day. All five members stayed in ABC for four days. On 25 September, all of them returned to C2, but Garner and Stahringer then went back to ABC. On the 26th snow was falling, so all members retreated to BC, and their bid to climb Makalu was finished. There just was too much snow.
