| Route Notes | Dignan and his helper, Siddhi Bahadur Tamang, established only two fixed camps on Makalu: C1 at 6400m on 11 September and C4 at 8000m on 15 October for their final push to the summit. Thus C1 was their only fixed camp until summit day. All other "camps" were temporary camps as they moved up and down the mountain. It was the wind that defeated them. On their summit day, 16 October, it was blowing at 80-100 mph and it "affected" both men's fingers. (In addition, two weeks later Dignan still had wind-blown black patches on his face.) They gave up and turned around at 8050m and spent their summit day getting down to BC. (They left C4 at 8000m at 8:00 am to descend and were in BC at 9:00 pm.) When they left the mountain on 17 October, they had not one tent left intact, all had been shredded by the wind. Hired: Siddhi Bahadur Tamang, 7/6/81, Simigaon, Dolakha, Cho Oyu X1, Manaslu X1 |
