| Route Notes | Team left C4 at midnight on 26-27 May. The weather was clear and still about -20 degrees. Nobody else was left on the mountain, so they were on their own. When they reached the seracs at 7900m, Zangrilli was too tired to keep on breaking the trail, so they decided to turn around at about 3:30 am. They descended all the way to ABC, where Baranowski arrived at 6 pm and Zangrilli at 8 pm (he was carrying the loads). The next two days they rested at BC and on 30 May they were picked up by helicopter directly from BC to return to Kathmandu. As far as Joelle Brupbacher is concerned, Zangrilli said that she died in the night of 22nd May after she had summited with her Sherpa Pasang. Zangrilli and Baranowska were at BC when they heard that Brupbacher was in trouble. Jorge E. went to Zangrilli's tent at midnight and Jorge, Steve House and Marko Prezelj went back up to take oxygen at about 1 am. At around 6 am, they were informed that Brupbacher had died; they were above C2 at about 6900m and turned back to BC after that. On his summit push on 27 May, Zangrilli collapsed Brupbacher's tent at C3 to bury her. Zangrilli said Brupbacher had not been well during the whole expedition (she was coughing a lot). |
