Route Notes Summit: 25 May by Lunger at 12:30 pm. Lunger, Stitzinger and Von Melle left C4 at 12:30 am on 25th May. Weather was clear but very cold. When Stitzinger and Von Melle reached about 8050m, Stitzinger had very cold feet. He was only wearing skiing boots as he had planned to ski down the mountain. However, in these conditions it was impossible to carry on in these boots. Von Melle did not want to continue by herself. Lunger was well ahead and she could not see him, so she decided to turn back as well. They turned around at 2:30 am and descended to C4, where they rested for a few hours. At 8 am, they descended to ABC, where they arrived at 6 pm. Lunger carried on and had a straightforward climb. There was a bit of fresh snow but he had a good run. He overtook Arnold Coster's team, who were using oxygen. He crossed the ridge to the summit together Guntis Branos of Arnold Coster's expedition. He stayed on the summit for about 15 minutes. Great views, but very windy. He descended to C4, where he arrived at 7 pm. On his way down, he helped Arnold Coster bring down Adele Pennington, who was suffering from HAPE. The next day, he descended to C2 and on 27th May to ABC. Greher, Gruber, Haas, Hackhofer, Grassl, Lieske, Soell and Stark reached Makalu La (C3) at 7400m on 15th May. They were intending to spend the night at C3, but the wind was too strong to stay there or set up camp. They descended to C2, where they stayed the night. On 16th May the whole group descended to ABC and everyone (apart from Stitzinger, Von Melle and Lunger) left BC on 17th May as they did not have time to try another summit push. They walked out via East Col, West Col and Amphu Laptsa. Oxygen: Not taken and not used.
