Route Notes C3 at Makalu La. After establishing C2 on 21 April, the three members went down to BC on 22nd to rest. They went back up to C1 on the 25th, to C2 on the 26th, on the 27th established C3 at the Makalu La at 7568m, and on the 28th returned to BC again to rest. They set out from BC once again on 7 May and went directly to C2. On the 8th they climbed to C3. On the 9th Garcia and Tashi Lhakpa proceeded to the C4 [site] while the other two members retreated to BC because of the wind. Garcia and Tashi rejoined them in BC on the 10th. Finally, they made one more attempt to gain the summit. The three members plus Pasang Temba left BC for C2 on 16 May. They got to C3 on the 17th, and that night they left the camp for a summit push. At 4:00 am on 18 May they had been able to get to only 7800m, where they were hit by fierce wind and low visibility. They were forced to retreat back to C3 and on down to BC. The climb was finished. The expedition's only health problem was stomach trouble that struck Tashi Lhakpa. He left the team on 14 May, returned to BC a week later but did not go above BC again.
