Route Notes Independent Greek on Makalu, Michael Styllas - 13 Nov 2008 Styllas was on Thamserku Trekking's permit with Spanish team but was an independent climber. After arriving at BC, Styllas on 19 October went down to Yangri Kharka to recuperate from a chest infection. He went back up to Hillary BC on the 21st and returned to BC on 23rd; by now he had fully recovered. He had one Sherpa with him, Nima Sherpa, and they spent the next few days acclimatizing. On the 24th they went up to the site C1 at 6200m and back to BC the same day. On the 27th they went to C2 at 6800m and again back to BC the same day. On 30 October, Styllas and Nima left C2 at 10:30 am, after waiting for the sun to reach the camp, and climbed up to 7300m, 100m below the Makalu La, at 3:30 pm. Now it was warm and no wind, a lovely day, and they stayed there for an hour and a half before returning to C2. On the 2nd the weather changed: it was cold and windy, so they retreated to BC. There acclimatization was over. Now Styllas hoped to climb Kangchungtse via its normal South Ridge route from the Makalu La. But the weather continued to be cold and windy, and the cook from Nomad Nepal Trekking, the American team's trekking agency, whom he had expected to stay with him, was leaving with the Americans, so the Greek also left with the Americans (led by Steve House) on 5 November.
