Route Notes C3 at Makalu La. Latvian Makalu Expedition, led by Atis Plakans - 3 June 2008 Atis Plakans and his wife Liga Plakane left C4 for the summit at 2:40 am on 18 May. They reached 7850m at 8:30 am, where the French team led by Ludovic Challeat had pitched their C4 tent. They had been climbing too slowly to this point to continue in a summit bid now, and they felt it too dangerous or them to go on. They waited there for the French to return from their own summit attempt in the hope that the Latvians could used the French tent after the French went on down, but the French were weak and had to help each other to descend slowly; they arrived finally at 5:15 pm and needed the tent for themselves. The Latvians descended to their own C4 at 7600m. On the 19th, they went down to C3 at 7456m with the idea that Lisovskis and Sadauskis would establish a higher C4. But Lisovskis did not reach C3 but got to only 7200m on the 20th. Now, Mrs Plakane said: "my force was finished" and she could not make another summit bid. But on the 21st she went up to 7600m with Plakans and Sadauskis to take tent and food down to C2; they arrived there at 4:00 pm. At 5:00 pm, Plakans went up from 7600m alone in another summit attempt. At 8:00 pm he was at 7900m rested there, and then resumed his ascent. At 1:00 am on 22 May he reached 8250m, which was below the col, and then turned around because he was so sleepy that kept nodding off. He managed to return to C3 (7456m) at 3:00 am. At 12:00 noon, he resumed his descent, taking the camp down to BC, where he arrived at 5:00 pm. The team's climb was finished. Mrs. Plakane was the only member to use oxygen; she used it from 7700m up to 7900m intermittently on the 18th, and again at C3 on and off during the night of the 20-21 May. Tomins, the doctor, went to C2 on 15 May, then descended to BC on the 16th. He was not expected to climb high.
