Route Notes C2 at Makalu La. Resch left BC 12 May to camp at 6600m; arrived Makalu La's C2 on 13 May. Left C2 with Ortner's climbers and Trippacher climber. At 8300m Katstaller and both other Ortner summiters met him going up while they descending; he was very tired; A Lugger met him at 8250m (he was ahead of Katstaller in descent) and Resch said this the only good day to go up and he was sitting at that time. Another Australian woman from Trippacher's team was the last to see Resch; he was before false summit at about 8400m and still going up but on his knees. Ortner on 18 May saw no sign of him. On his way up he had left something at about every 100m and when seen on 14th May at 8300m had no rucksack jacket nothing. Ruckensteiner thinks maybe he reached top, then fell; possibly but down again and not up again but just not seen by Ortner. Source of above information: Katstaller, Oberluggauer, Ruckensteiner of Ortner's expedition - 26 May 01 Kaltenbrunner started with Resch from C4 at 5:30 am but he was slow and she climbed ahead of him from start. She saw him at 8300m at plateau ridge he looked tired and going on zagged line like drunkard. She and Denk told him several times to go down but he was determined to go to false summit only 20m lower than main summit and he went on up, Said he would meet them in C5. He was told fixed ropes above were not secure; maybe so tired he sat down and died; maybe fell. Corona (Italian) - during his descent, he saw red jacket and thermos in snow along the trail; had met Resch earlier that day and Resch did not respond when Corona spoke to him - this was at 8000-8100m.
