| Route Notes | BC at lower BC ABC at higher BC site above glacier junction C1 at steep part of ascent below Makalu La C2 above Makalu La to right of glacier C3 before icefall north of top. 15 May left C3 1:00 am for top which reached together after Italians and Koreans at 3:00 pm and returned to C3 at 12:00 midnight. Reached true summit (so did Italians and Koreans). 16th left C3 at about 10 am and 5m lower Mehnert sat down suddenly and died probably of pulmonary embolism (left in a small tent and covered it with stones on same day). Too late to return to ABC, slept in C1 which reached at 6:00 and 7:00 pm and to BC next day. Route was a variation of the standard route: Makalu La-(Left of) NW Ridge. [Hartung and Augermann only attempted Baruntse, then departed with a trekking group.] |
