Route Notes BC at 5300m at glacier's junction near Messner's BC C1 at 6000m at Chago Glacier's side C2 at 6650m at beginning of steep face leading to Col (Messner's C1) C3 at 7400m at Makalu La. Late Sept-early Oct tried to pitch C3 at 7000m but bad weather prevented this and finally put it at La. Waited too long to make C3 and therefore were unsuccessful. After 13th Oct too windy to go higher and by now 3 had slight frostbite. 26th Sept Erel tried to reach pass with Wanda Rutkiewicz but turned back at 7000m when snowstorm began. Lack of experience in Himalaya made slow progress in early days, then wind and being "pretty tired" finished effort. 2 members left early because they decided they they had had enough.
