Route Notes BC next to Swiss C1 next to Swiss on SE Ridge C2 next to Swiss on SE Ridge end on biv. Problem with Swiss: didn't want German BC next to them and had taken easiest line on their SE Face which was SE Ridge, where they had put their C1 and C2. Swiss wanted Germans to wait till 6th or 7th Oct when they had reached summit. Germans waited 15 days (Swiss said if Germans started before Swiss finished, Swiss would endanger German camps). Germans trekked to Kalapattar during waiting period. Germans had time only for 21 days so walked daily carrying loads to C1 and C2. One man to Swiss C3 on 25th Oct and on 26th slept there, 27th to C2, slept in C1 and 28th slept there. 29th Oct Swiss said Germans could go to C3 only next day. Between C2 and C3 Hof got stomach trouble. Now time and money running out; one week more on mountain needed.
