Route Notes Expedition made no attempt to climb the mountain, according to Dhyrenfurth in the "America Alpine Journal," 1956, pg 8. Quote: "I look at the southern defenses of the east ridge convinced both of us (Dyrenfurth and Senn) that any attempt to establish a series of camps and to lead heavily-laden Sherpas through their would be suicidal. While you were studying about huge wall of steep ice, several avalanches broke off from high shell burying the only possible avenue of approach under masses of blue green ice. Even if one could reach the ridge, the route would be extremely long and exposed to the winds. The upper most part of the east ridge is very steep and undoubtedly heavily corniced, and the main summit of Lhotse could not be possibly reach that way."
