Route Notes On May 14 summit bid to put up fix rope till 8200m, came down to C5. Next day 15 May attempt for summit, but too much snow below 200m to summit and a big serac overhanging on the climbing route; not possible to tackle - it was danger of probable avalanche. Then the team of Lee, Um and Sirdar Pasang Namgyal and Gyalzen turned around to BC where the team reached at about 8 pm. Weather was bad all the time. Clouds, snowfall everyday for 11-12 days. It was dangerous. Um said Austrian ascent in 1970 but not sure if that was same route. Pasang Rita from Thami and Pemba Rinji ran away after C2. Pemba Dorji whose father climbed SW Face of Everest two times (1985 & 1986) with Um also sent away due to his irresponsible behavior. Out of 9 Sherpa support Um had only six Sherpas at the end. The team used lots of pitons snow bars and ice screws. The route is graded at 60 X 90 degrees all the way. On 15th Um, Lee and two Sherpas started from C5 at 03:00 hours. Reached 8200m about 07:00 hours with oxygen then turned around to BC. Um thinks if the team was there on the mountain one week before it may had good chance to summit. An went up to 7700m - exhausted and gave up. Chung is support member who reached up to 6800m. Nam too is support member and reached up to 7700m. Pack is also support member and reached up to 6300m. Um will be going to Nanga Parbat in winter. The Um team returned to Kathmandu by helicopter on May 22 and will leave on 26th. Sherpas to high point: Pasang Namgyal, Khumjung, 31/1/73, when summited (with Um) Yalung 5/05/04 (trekking agent now says born 25/11/72, Everest X1 Phur Gyalzen/Fur Geljen, Thami/Yilang, 16/4/70, Everest X2, Cho Oyu X2, Yalung Kang with Um 5/5/04
