| Route Notes | C1 at top of Icefall (pitched for emergencies and never used) C2 in West Cwm C3 on Lhotse West Face C4 at bottom of Couloir. Difficult making steps up inside couloir in hard surface snow and no fixed ropes (used some old ropes below C4). 12 May from C4 at 5:00 am with Simunek and Lhakpa Dorje alternated leading and cutting steps. Arrived at top at 2:00 pm, stayed 30 minutes to take video pix and slept in C3 C3 (arrived 7:30 pm in dark). 13 May Hruby and Moravek left C4 at 6:00 am and at top 11:30 and 11:45 am using Simunek steps in some sections having to remove fresh snow, had to make new steps in other places; slept in C2 which arrived at 2:30 and 8:00 pm snow and wind (storm made unsafe to stay in C3). Sherpa: Lhakpa Dorje, Sanam, Solukhumbu, summited Makalu with Simunek 19 May 98. |
