Route Notes Letter from P. Hillary - 11 April 79 This Kusum Kanguru expedition is certainly having its problems. We attempted to put a basecamp up the valley from Ghat but were daunted by ravines and juniper. You need a week of accesss preparation for that side. So then we decided to try the Monzo side, the one attempted by the Japnaese. It looks the most feasible route from the two eastern valleys. Murray and I climbed up to over 17,000 ft yesterday and he has become a friend. Murray expressed his doubts, mainly of himself. We talked and Murray agreed he really didn't want to climb KK. So the situation now is Nena and I will make an attempt. Please put Nena's name on our climbing permit and seek another week's climbing time on to our mountain climbing period (making it the 5th of May our last day on the mountain).
