Route Notes The team flew from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and by chartered Twin Otter aircraft to a new airfield at Tolcha, just east of Rara Lake. They trekked east to Gamgadhi and to Mugu Karnali River, east along the river to Mugu Khola, then north along the Mugu Khola to their BC at 3600m on 15 May on the west side of Mugu Khola. They established their ABC at 4600m on 21 May east of Mugu Khola just southwest of point 6053m (on HMG's map called Western Nepal Sheet), close to the border ridge on which Kojichuwa Chuli is located and south-southwest of the summit. The five members (no Sherpas) climbed up to the site of C1 at 5100m on 24 May. None of them slept there. Honda and Suzuki turned back to ABC; Suzuki had an altitude problem and Honda went down with her. At the same time Fujikawa, Kawamura and Kimoto climbed onto the border ridge and down the Tibetan side on the East Face of the ridge where they made C2 at 5300m and slept that night, 24 May. They had to fix rope from C1 site up the rocky Nepalese side of the ridge and down the icefall to C2 on the Tibetan side. The next day, 25 May, the three men left C2 at 8:00 am, traversed diagonally northwards on the East Face up onto the border ridge and the summit, which was on the ridge. They reached the summit at 7:00 pm; they had made the first ascent of the mountain. They slept at 6200m in their bivy tent. They left their bivouac at 5:30 am the next morning, followed their ascent route and descended to C2 that night. They returned to BC on the 27th.
